URGENT MESSAGE PLEASE READ: KATMAI BEAR HUNT

I've been photographing the brown bears out on Katmai National Park and Preserve, Alaska for almost ten years. On October 1, 2007 bear hunters and hunting outfitters arrived on Katmai National Preserve GMU 9C to hunt the brown bears. What happened was absolutely disgusting and unethical. The brown bears in GMU 9C have been feeding on salmon in the streams for centuries and they've been co-existing in close proximity with wildlife viewers, photographers, biologists and fishermen for years. Because these bears in this area have become habituated to humans, they have lost their fight or flight reaction and the hunters were able to walk up to them unabated and shoot point blank. After spending the entire summer feeding in the streams, the brown bears were not able to differentiate the hunters from anyone else, so as the bears were finishing their last of the feeding on salmon in the streams they were extremely easy prey for hunters and were shot and killed at times less than 20-30 feet.  This is a most unethical and egregious hunting practice and should be stopped at once. This year the Katmai bear hunt was professionally video filmed and photographed so the public could see what was actually happening to the bears in this region of Katmai National Preserve. I'm asking everyone who reads this message to do the following so this ridiculous bear slaughter can be stopped.

1) Write a letter or email to your local Congressmen asking for the Katmai bear hunt to be stopped in GMU 9C, Katmai National Preserve, Alaska .

2) Write Alaska's Governor Sarah Palin a letter or email asking for the Katmai bear hunt to be stopped in GMU 9C, Katmai National Preserve, Alaska. www.gov.state.ak.us/govmail.php

3) Write a letter or email to the National Park Services regional director Marcia Blaszak asking for the Katmai bear hunt to be stopped in GMU 9C, Katmai National Preserve, Alaska. www.nps.gov/state/ak

4) Please send this message to as many people as you can.
